Brake Calipers
Curious about the brake calipers on your Ford vehicle? They're basically the clamping mechanism attached to your pads and they are used to slow and stop your car, truck, or SUV.
When you brake to slow or stop your car, you press the brake pedal. This action hydraulically pressurizes the brake lines which are attached to your brake calipers. A piston within the caliper engages, and the brake pads are forced forward into the brake rotors. The friction created from this, is what essentially stops your car.
Signs your Brake Calipers are going bad
Being that your calipers are exposed to the road elements located directly behind your wheels, over time, they can, or will become corrosive. Signs that your calipers are beginning to fail are:
- Grinding or screeching when braking
- A pulling sensation in the steering wheel to one side or the other
- A bouncy or soft brake pedal
- Longer distance to stop
- Visible paint flaking or corrosion on calipers
