Brake Rotors
The rotor discs located behind your Ford's wheels are the resistant mechanism that your brake calipers grip your brake pads to. Here's how your brake system works.
When you press your brake pedal to slow or stop your vehicle, fluid is sent down a series of brake lines to charge the calipers. These calipers have pistons which press the attached pads into the rotors. The rotors are usually made of metallic compounds that help create the resistant on the pads in order to stop the vehicle. A simple, but essential part to your brake system.
Types of Brake Rotors
There are several main brake rotor styles designed for vehicles. Smooth rotors have a flat surface with no gaps or holes. They are the most common on commuter vehicles and tend to last the longest from their simplicity.
The other two main types of rotors are drilled and slotted. Drilled rotors have holes across the surface of the metal plate which enhance performance by reducing frictional heat, and allowing air and water to pass through. Slotted are like drilled, but the holes are wider. There is also a combination of the two styles and are known as drilled and slotted rotors. Mainly used on higher performance Ford models.
