The timing belt in your vehicle is the operational component that connects your crankshaft to the camshaft. This drive belt synchronizes the movement of your engine's pistons and valves to keep your vehicle running smoothly.

What is a Timing Belt Made of

Like other drive belts, the timing belt is made of heat-resistant rubber. The top side is flat and smooth, and the bottom has teeth grooves which grip to the pulleys. The teethed part of the timing belt is what keeps the intervals in time. Without it, the functionality of your engine will seize.

When to Change my Timing Belt?

Many timing belts can last up to, or beyond 100,000 miles. Though there are limited signs that reveal you need replacement, the main symptoms of a bad timing belt are:

  • Squealing noises when engine runs
  • Vibrations from beneath the hood
  • Frays or cracks across the belt surface

If you encounter a timing belt issue, seek an inspection from a Ford mechanic near you to diagnose the problem. Avoiding an immediate fix can further damage your engine and could leave you stranded on the roadside with a dead vehicle.
